Sotheby`s to auction Alexandre Benois works
Sotheby`s is set to auction an important collection of works created by one of the greatest masters of the early 20th century, Alexandre Benois.
ґSome 130 pieces that are expected to earn from $1.2 to $1.8 million will go under the hammer on 29 November and will be exhibited at Sotheby?s headquarters in Paris until 22 September.
Such a significant and full collection of Benois`s works is being sold for the very first time. The collection includes stage sets; costumes; watercolor landscapes of Russian, French and Italian sites; illustrations; sketches and portraits of the artist`s family.
The most valuable lots in the upcoming auction are View of the Bolshoi Kamenny, St. Petersburg, valued between $30,000 and $45,000, some 16 views of Versailles priced at $60,000 - $90,000, and views of Venice.
The auction house representatives expect Russian collectors to be the most interested bidders.
Alexandre Benois was a Russian painter, stage designer and art historian born into a family of architects with French origins. In 1901, Benois was named stage director of the Mariinsky Theater. In the 1910s he worked as a stage designer for the Russian Seasons - or Ballets Russes - a legendary ballet company organized by Russian impresario Sergey Diagilev.
The Benois de la Danse ballet prize was named in his honor. It was founded by the International Dance Association in Moscow in 1991.
